WhatsApp processes 27 billion messages in one day

Popular internet messaging application WhatsApp has processed 27 billion messages in one day, breaking its own record of 18 billion messages.

WhatsApp announced the record development through a Tweet, and went on to give a breakdown of the 27 billion messages.

Incoming messages and outgoing messages are not equal because the app’s group messages are counted as inbound: outbound, meaning if a message is sent to a group of ten people it adds the count by 1:10 (incoming: outgoing).

WhatsApp is tied to phone numbers helping its popularity to soar, especially among users who could use it instead SMS services when the rates from their mobile service providers are high.

Additionally, WhatsApp can be used on most devices and platforms such as Android, iOS, Blackberry, Windows Phone, Asha and Symbian, giving it an edge over Apple or BlackBerry’s Messenger.
