Google apps developer challenge 2012 now open

Google’s 2012 apps developer contest, the Google Apps Developer Challenge, is now open globally, Google has announced.

Developers across six regions in the world will now be invited to develop apps by using Google tools such as Google app engine and various API’s.

“With the Google Apps Developer Challenge, we hope developers across the globe will find new and innovative ways to use Apps Script, Apps and Drive APIs to build cool apps. This challenge is particularly unique as the APIs are available to a large community of developers who code in a variety of languages that include Java, PHP, Python, and .Net,” Google said.

Google has divided the global entries into six categories. They include Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and North Africa, India, South East Asia, Latin America, United States, Europe and rest of world

It is good to note that Africa has been given two categories to five for. This will give more applicants a chance to stand out from the continent.

“Developers in 6 regions across the world will win prizes that include Chromebooks and up to US$20,000 with other special prizes for students and female developers,” Google said.

Developers will have to structure their creations to fit into these categories:
· Enterprise / Small Business Solutions
· Social / Personal Productivity / Games / Fun
· Not-for-Profit: Education / Water / Food & Hunger / Health

Last year, two Kenyans won theGoogle Android App challenge, another Google developer challenge. David Lemayian developed Olalashe, an app that helps you communicate in times of distress. Elan Telemedia came up with Shoppers delight, an app that helps shoppers compare prices.

Applications are open until August 24, 2012.
