Backup service for phone contacts – now in Beta!

After losing, spoiling or upgrading their mobile phone, here’s a mobile application that many of us would have liked to have.

Solution that Kenyan based startup has come up with, 6ix degrees*, is now in Beta and ready to backup contacts from your phone. In addition to periodical backups, the data from mobile phonebook back-ups is aggregated to create an intelligent (using an algorithm) directory which others can use to find friends, all this by using the theory of six-degrees-of-separation.
Here’s what to do to try it out:
1) you must have a Java ME enabled phone,
2) go to beta.6ix.co.ke, fill an easy registration form after which you’ll receive a link to download the app.
* 6ix degrees is similar solution to Zyb, Danish wireless address book company, acquired by Vodafone in 2008 for 31.5 million euros. However, according to their website today, the service will be shut down starting from Dec 31 2011.
