Ericsson, Tigo to connect 30,000 in northern Ghana

Millennium Village Project, a nonprofit organization committed to helping rural African communities lift themselves out of extreme poverty, has been established in northern Ghana to connect over 30, 000 people living in the region’s rural villages with Internet.

The millennium Village is supported by Ericsson in partnership with Tigo and will deploy a voice and data network along with hybrid power solutions. The partnership will see Mobile network coverage and connectivity delivered to the targeted villages in the Northern Ghana.

MDG Centre for West Africa director said mobile services along with Internet connectivity will boost all levels of development in the areas by accelerating advances in health, education, agriculture, infrastructure and business development through this partnership.

The project, funded by United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DfID,) aims at improving the residents’ social and economic well-being, as well as supporting the MDG’s efforts.

Ericsson Sub-Saharan Africa president Lars Lindén said the new Millennium Village will act as a catalyst for economic growth while improving the quality of life of the residents.

Ericsson is lead ICT partner in the Millennium Villages Project (MVP), established in 2006 by the Earth Institute at Columbia University to help rural African communities lift themselves out of extreme poverty.

Millenium village is a partnership between the Earth Institute and other stakeholders working with about 500,000 people in 10 African countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
