Uber extends services to Cape Winelands

Taxing hailing service Uber is extending uberBLACK and uberX services to South Africa’s Cape Winelands this weekend, allowing travel between Cape Town and the wine growing areas of the Western Cape.

The company today announced the expansion to Paarl, Somerset West and Stellenbosch, with service kicking off for the Bastille Festival taking place this week.

“Say goodbye to the days of designated drivers and hello to that second (okay… fourth) glass of wine! Uber has got you covered,” the company said.

HumanIPO reported last week month had launched uberX in Cape Town, with the low-cost offering providing the company’s personal driver service in less high-end cars and at a lower cost.

Uber first launched in South Africa in Johannesburg in August last year, followed by  Cape Town and Durban launches in October.

In November complaints arose in Cape Town as users of the service reported being collected in lower-tier cars such as Fords, Chevrolets and Toyotas, as opposed to the premium Audi, BMW and Mercedes cars expected from the high-end service.

Uber said it is also exploring the possibility of integrating M-Pesa mobile money payment for a Kenyan launch.
