Kenya’s NOFBI phase 2 to take off in July

The second phase of Kenya’s National Optic Fibre Broadband Infrastructure (NOFBI) will take off in July with the Ministry of ICT adding 1,600 kilometres of fibre optic coverage.

Funded to the tune of US$72.5 million loan from EXIM Bank of China through a concessional government-to-government loan agreement the new project will cover all 47 counties.

In his speech outlining the key achievements of 2013/ 2014, cabinet secretary at the Ministry of ICT Dr Fred Matiangi said the project will also include installing Local Area Networks (LAN) in three buildings at each county headquarters and construction of a Metro Fibre Network in all the 47 counties.

“Survey of the Fibre Route is complete in all the 47 counties and the laying of the fibre set to start by May 2014 after approval by the roads authority,” he said.

Huawei Technologies is the project contractor, with 4,300 kilometres of fibre optic cable laid out since 2009.

In the second phase all 47 county governments are earmarked for connection.
