Additional costs hindering .ng domain uptake

The costs of changing the details on a company’s letterhead paper, business cards and other branded documents are responsible for corporate and organisational reluctance to switch to .ng domain names, according to Ope Odusan, managing director of Africa.com and former chief operating officer (CEO) of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA)

“When I was in NiRA as chief operating officer, I met with some banks on this issue. They were complaining of huge cost outlay involved in changing those items to reflect their new website, which is in several millions of naira, as a major factor. If you look at the few banks that have changed to .ng, when you log in on .ng it will redirect you to their .com website which does not make sense,” Odusan said.

He said registering with Nigeria-based .ng domain names was a way through which organisations could boost the Nigerian brand, while also being secure from hackers and phishing.
