Musicians, movie producers urged to leverage internet for content

Musicians and movie producers have been urged to leverage the power of the internet, which boasts 29 million searches per minute, to showcase their work to their targeted audiences.

While speaking to at the Broadcast, Film and Music Africa (BFMA) 2014 event in Nairobi, Kenya, Teju Ajani, YouTube content partnerships lead for Sub-Saharan Africa, said there are currently 100 hours of video uploaded every minute.

“What the internet has done is giving every single person the ability their own broadcaster,” said Ajani.

He said the internet gives significant opportunities for content producers to discover, reach and distribute to their audiences in addition to them being able to control their content usage as well as its accessibility to pirates.

While using the internet, Ajani said, it is important for the content producer to be aware of rights of the producer, director and artists.

“You need to understand your rights and the other person’s rights; one time, time bound, perpetual and expiring,” said Ajani.

There is also the need for harnessing social media, with Ajani saying the producer should connect with followers, get direct and immediate feedback and also get in touch with people who influence the social media space to talk about their production in addition to engaging with their audience and reaching beyond their borders.

“Mobiles have moved from just speech to a content distribution platform to an entertainment platform,” said Ajani.
