Globacom Nigeria targets 90% 3G coverage in 6 months, set to upgrade network

Globacom has announced plans to increase its 3G coverage in Nigeria to 90 per cent from the current 43 per cent, while it will also invest in network upgrades in order to tackle quality of service (QoS) issues.

Head of operations Bisi Koleosho announced the increase in coverage to journalists in Lagos, while also disclosing the network is signing a US$100 million network upgrade contract to improve quality.

He said the network has already upgraded around 3,000 sites in Abuja, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Lagos and several other locations across Nigeria.

Globacom, along with rival operators MTN and Airtel, has been on the receiving end of some tough treatment by regulator the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over QoS, with HumanIPO reporting last week the NCC had extended the one month ban it placed on the sale of new SIM cards by the operators.

The extension comes following the expiration of the earlier one-month ban the commission announced in April in addition to a NGN647.5 million (US$4 million) fine it imposed on the three networks.
