Internet Solutions takes full ownership of AlwaysOn

South African internet service provider (ISP) Internet Solutions (IS) has increased its shareholding in Wi-Fi provider AlwaysOn to 100 per cent for an undisclosed sum.

IS originally purchased 51 per cent of the company, which provides Wi-Fi services to users in over 1,400 locations, in 2008.

The company said Wi-Fi has become increasing important to individuals and businesses in a highly mobile and connected world.

“The demand for Wi-Fi continues to grow at an extraordinary rate, brought about by the growth of a global society that expects to be always connected anytime, anywhere. For example in the US, Wi-Fi connections account for more than 37 per cent of digital traffic over mobile phones. And about 90 per cent of internet access from tablets is done via Wi-Fi, not through a 3G or 4G network,” said Sean Nourse, chief solutions officer at Internet Solutions.

Always On said it would continue to operate under its current brand despite the acquisition.

“Today, internet connectivity is now demanded, irrespective of location, and users expect the mobile experience to equal that of the office experience. With a workplace that is no longer defined by an address but rather defined by a connection – anywhere and everywhere – it is important that the indoor and outdoor WiFi experience is consistent, secure, reliable and affordable,” Nourse said.
