West Africa’s largest data centre to be commissioned in July

MainOne’s US$25 million data centre, currently under construction in Lagos, Nigeria, will be commissioned in July, according to Temitope Osunrinde, the company’s marketing support analyst.

Speaking to HumanIPO on the sidelines of EduNet 2014 conference at Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife, Nigeria, Osunrinde said when officially commissioned in July the facility will offer among other things location and managed services.

Furthermore, he said the facility will allow the company to provide hosting services.

“Many people go to Amazon for hosting, now we can do it at MainOne,” he said.

The plan for the Tier III data centre was unveiled in October by chief executive officer (CEO) Funke Opeke, who said the facility would be the largest of its kind in West Africa at 1,500 square metres with a 600 rack capacity.

“We are delighted with this project because of the immense benefits it will provide our customers. Internet penetration has been a huge issue in Nigeria, especially to the hinterlands,” she said.

“The new data centre will leverage on MainOne’s network, which is peered with leading operators and Internet exchanges worldwide to provide global reach to our customers across all locations.”
