yuMobile settles with employees ahead of Kenya exit

Kenyan operator yuMobile has agreed separation packages with staff ahead of its exit from the country and will negotiate employment terms with projected new owners Airtel and Safaricom.

HumanIPO reported in March a group of Essar employees had gone to court seeking to obtain agreement on a retrenchment plan with them ahead of the proposed acquisition of yuMobile by the country’s two leading operators. Safaricom is still considering whether to go ahead with the deal.

yuMobile has now come to an agreement with the employees.

“We have agreed to settle the petition in terms of a separation package which will be paid at the point of exit from the company,” lawyer Charles Kanjama told a Nairobi court.

“All employees including those who had sued the company authorise yuMobile to make all reasonable efforts to negotiate their possible recruitment with either Safaricom or Airtel,” he said, though he added there was no guarantee of future employment.
