The Nairobi county government has allocated KSh50 million (US$575,000) for the setting up of a radio station as it seeks to increase participation of citizens in the county’s affairs and cut the cost of advertising through commercial channels.

Business Daily reports the county government has become concerned over reduced coverage of county issues by state broadcaster the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

“The radio station will serve as a platform to communicate our policies and development agenda, we are moving to secure licence with the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) for radio frequency spectrum,” said finance executive Gregory Mwakanongo.

According to Information, Communication and E-government executive Mohammed Abdullahi , content generation has already started, but there is no set date as of yet for when the new station will go on air.

“We have to develop the content and specifications first then we will go to tendering,” he said.
