Over 40,000 .gov.ng email accounts created for Nigerian officials – NiRA

Mary Uduma, president of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has announced the creation of more than 40,000 .gov.ng email accounts for Nigerian government officials across ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

She said this in a chat with newsmen at the Annual General Meeting of NiRA held in Lagos.

“40,000 .gov.ng email accounts have been created for all principal officers, permanent secretaries, heads of paratstatals, directors and other management staff of various MDAs and new easy-to-remember domain names are being created. This will allow affairs of the site to be run more securely within the national domain space,” Uduma said.

She said NiRA targeted up to 250,000 domain hostings for 2013 and was able to achieve more than 50 per cent of the target – a feat she described as impressive.

On the association’s August 2014 deadline for all MDAs to migrate to the .gov.ng domain, she said it will not change, and added the association will be organising Domain Name System Security Extension (DNSSEC) training for stakeholders in the capital city of Abuja.

“The Domain Name System Security Extension (DNSSEC) training can strengthen trust in the Internet by helping to protect users from redirection to fraudulent websites and unintended addresses. The DNSSEC training coming up in July in Abuja is organised by NiRA for Nigerians,” she said.
