MTN in talks over streaming services – report

South African mobile operator MTN is in talks with an Asian content provider, aiming to give South Africans access to streaming films and series, according to a report.

Bloomberg reports the deal will probably be completed this year but the parties involved have yet to decide on a commercial model for the partnership.

The deal will give MTN’s 24.9 million South African subscribers access to streaming content, hoping to boost its data revenues as voice profits drop.

HumanIPO reported in January part state-owned telecommunications provider Telkom was holding talks with Netflix, Comcast and Naspers as it looked to launch a video-on-demand service.

Last year Nasperswas linked to discussions with Vodacom but the company said it was looking at signing a deal with multiple players as opposed to an exclusive agreement.

HumanIPO has contacted MTN for comment but has yet to receive a response.
