Kenya to help South Sudan in formation of ICT regulatory body

Kenya's ICT cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiangi

Kenya will offer South Sudan’s Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services expertise to help form its ICT regulatory body, which will be the youngest in the region.

Speaking as part of a panel that included Rwanda’s minister of ICT Jean Philbert Nsengimana during the Connected Kenya summit in Mombasa, Kenya’s ICT minister Dr Fred Matiangi said he was looking for two private companies to include in the overall team that will help South Sudan in this undertaking.

In an interview with journalists, Eng. Juma Stephen Lugga, undersecretary at South Sudan’s Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services, said his country needed help in regulation, infrastructure, roaming and SIM card registration, among other things.

“We asked Kenya to help us come up with our own regulatory body and are looking at having the body in place in the next two months,” said Lugga.

It also emerged from the summit that other East African countries are looking to join the Connected Kenya annual forum and make it the Connected East Africa forum, championing the ICT agenda for the northern corridor countries of Kenya, South Sudan and Rwanda.

“We can do so much when we join hands together,” said Matiangi.
