Google has beaten off competition from Facebook to acquire solar-powered drone maker Titan Aerospace to boost its attempts to deliver internet to underserved parts of the world.

No details have as yet been revealed of the deal, which could further Google’s efforts to increase global internet access following its balloon programme Project Loon last year.

Reports last month suggested Facebook – another internet giant looking to increase internet accessibility in remote areas – was negotiating with Titan Aerospace to purchase the company for US$60 million.

According to its website, Titan is developing a range of solar-powered “atmospheric satellites”, with initial commercial operations beginning in 2015. The drones, whose wingspan is slightly shorter than that of a Boeing 777,  can remain aloft for up to five years and can fly at an altitude of 65,000 feet.
