Leading Kenyan operator Safaricom has reported 300 Samsung Galaxy S5 pre-order sales ahead of the global launch of the device.

The devices will be available at Safaricom stores from tomorrow (Friday).

Over 400,000 high-end Samsung devices were sold in 2013, representing 23 per cent of the smartphone devices sold through Safaricom retail outlets in Kenya during the period.

“Safaricom will continue championing for the increased penetration of smartphones from the current 67 per cent, with a view to enabling more Kenyans take advantage of the increasing solutions available for business and personal phones through the devices,” said Peter Arina, general manager of Safaricom’s Consumer Business unit.

The growth of smartphones in Kenya has been attributed to a growing middle class that has increased the uptake of these types of phones.
