First Zimbabwe Startup Weekend set for May

Zimbabwe is set to host its first Startup Weekend in May, hoping to foster the development of tech ideas in the country.

HumanIPO reported last year Startup Weekend was taking place at Strathmore University iLab in Nairobi, while events have also been held elsewhere in Africa.

The event will be held from May 16 to 18 at Hypercube, Zimbabwe’s first tech hub located in Harare, and is funded by Google for Entrepreneurs.

“This May, Hypercube in conjunction with Mercy Corps, are organising this 54-hour marathon event focused on tech-entrepreneurship as a way for aspiring entrepreneurs to create new opportunities for themselves in a challenging environment,” Hypercube said in a statement.

Startup Weekend has hosted over 1,000 events in 110 different countries, reaching over 100,000 entrepreneurs and 13,000 startups worldwide.

“At the end of the three days, the team with the best idea is selected. The winners will be eligible to win valuable vouchers to help you grow your business online from Google, .Co and Amazon Web Services, a three-month accelerator programme with Hypercube, smart phones, tablets as well as financial and business development opportunities,” Hypercube said.

A startup bootcamp will be held before the event, allowing entrepreneurs with tickets to the Startup Weekend to refine their pitches, identify open source and other technologies, and connect with would-be customers to validate their ideas before the main event.
