Microsoft launches Office for iPad

Microsoft has announced the launch of its Office software for Apple’s iPad, a move expected for the past two years and which opens the company up to new revenue streams.

HumanIPO reported last week Microsoft might be releasing an iPad version of their popular software.

Microsoft chief executive officer (CEO) Satya Nadella announced the release at his first high profile event since his new appointment.

The release falls in line with the company’s “cloud first, mobile first” mantra, making use of its Office 365 subscription service to enable document creation functionality on the platform.

“Microsoft is focused on delivering the cloud for everyone, on every device. It’s a unique approach that centers on people — enabling the devices you love, work with the services you love, and in a way that works for IT and developers,” said Nadella.

Office 365 subscribers can add an iPad to their Office 365 subscription benefits to access the full functionality of the applications, however they can be downloaded for free to view documents without editing functionality.

The company also announced it would be making its Office app for iPhone and Android smartphones free.
