South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) has urged those who applied for their smart IDs and have received notifications to collect them to do so.

Home Affairs deputy minister Fatima Chohan has said notifications from the DoHA were not a hoax.

“We encourage citizens to collect their smart ID cards,” said Chohan.

HumanIPO reported last month the country had started its initial rollout of smart IDs to 16 year old youths and pensioners over 60.

Chohan said many of the calls received by Home Affairs related to queries to verify whether their IDs were really ready.

The DoHA said since the implementation of the smart ID applications over 140,00 had been processed and 26,000 had been issued.
