World Cup draw prompts 1.7m Tweets

Twitter has revealed over 1.7 million Tweets were posted regarding the draw for the football World Cup on Saturday, as fans flocked to see who their national teams will be playing in Brazil in June 2014.

Fans, footballers and even the Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff took to the hashtag #Brazil2014 to discuss the draw and the groups.

The micro-blogging site said the peak in conversation came just after midday Eastern Standard Time (EST) – the east coast of the United States of America (USA) – when it was announced the USA would join Ghana, Germany and Portugal in Group G.

US players took to Twitter to comment on the group, with USA midfielder Michael Bradley calling the group the “group of death”, while goalkeeper Tim Howard said he relished the chance of a rematch against Ghana, following the USA’s defeat by Ghana at the last tournament in South Africa four years ago.

England player Jack Wilshere as well as Wales winger Gareth Bale also took to Twitter to mark their anticipation for the tournament, with Wilshere saying that despite the tough teams England will have to play, everyone has to defeat the best teams to win the tournament.
