ITU to launch African Digital Woman Award

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will launch a new award for African women in the digital industry to take place during African ICT Days in Cameroon.

Aiming to recognise women who take the lead in the digital industry in Africa, the new award will seek to encourage more females to take on careers in ICT.

Nominations are open until November 5, building up to the event on November 16 in Yaoundé.

Hamadoun Touré, ITU secretary general, said: “I am delighted to serve as a patron of the new African Digital Woman of the Year award and congratulate the organisers for raising awareness among the African governments and girls themselves of the tremendous opportunities an ICT career can offer.

African ICT Days is an annual conference and debate centred around ICT as organised by the ICT4 Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

Taking place for the third time this year, the event will focus on using technology for inclusive development in Africa by exploring the potential of digital economy for pushing growth domestic product (GDP) under the topic ‘diamonds in ICT mining’.

As part of the conference, workshops will be run on e-application, e-gamification, e-marketing, e-health, e-transportation, e-entrepreneurship, e-women, e-bigdata, e-business, e-learning and e-governance.

“Technology is now an essential part of every other field of human activity. That means that today’s tools can now be combined to such a degree over a whole range of fields,” Touré said.
