Drive demand for broadband – Kwele

Making South Africans aware of the benefits of broadband will benefit the country economically, says Puleng Kwele, chief technical officer (CTO) of Broadband Infraco.

Kwele told the Southern Africa Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC) in Stellenbosch, South Africa that the developmental potential of broadband could not be ignored.

“Potentially this is an industry that is about to create jobs for the youth of this country, because it is where the entrepreneurs will rise,” she said.

“We have got to be driving the demand. We have got to ensure that people understand what broadband can do for them.”

She added, however, that South Africans in general were aware of the benefits of broadband, and it may be a case of operators simply having to build the relevant infrastructure and people learning through usage of it.

“I think that to a point people do understand, where it is available,” Kwele said, pointing out that mobile operators had not had to educate people on how to use mobile phones, while South Africans are also prolific on social media.
